One of the first steps to becoming an Ohio notary public is completing a state-mandated background check. The process is straightforward, but it's important to understand the timing, required documentation, and what offenses may disqualify you from becoming a notary.
In this guide, we break down how to get your background check, what to expect, and how Ohio Notary Services can support you every step of the way.
Is a Background Check Required to Become an Ohio Notary Public?
Yes. Unless you are an attorney licensed in Ohio, a state of Ohio criminal background check is required to apply for an Ohio notary commission.
This is part of the state's efforts to ensure notaries meet ethical and legal standards and can be trusted with the responsibilities of the role.
How Long Does a Background Check for an Ohio Notary Public Take?
Once you've completed the background check, it can take 4 to 6 weeks for a report to process. Plan your application timeline accordingly, especially because:
- Your background check results are only valid for 6 months
- You must complete your training and Ohio Notary Public Exam before the background check expires
How to Complete Your BCI Background Check in Ohio
A BCI background check is required for all new and renewing Ohio notary public applicants (except licensed Ohio attorneys). Follow these simple steps to complete your check correctly:
Step 1: Schedule Your Fingerprinting Appointment
Visit an authorized WebCheck® location through the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI). You can find approved sites on the Ohio Attorney General’s website.
Step 2: Bring Proper Identification
Provide valid government-issued ID and complete the fingerprint impression sheet and form at your appointment.
Step 3: Use the Correct Code
When submitting your request, use code 147.022 — this identifies your background check as required for a notary public application.
Step 4: Send Results to Yourself
Request that your background check results be sent directly to you, not a third party. This ensures your report meets Ohio Secretary of State requirements.
Step 5: Wait for Processing
Processing typically takes 4–6 weeks. Your results are valid for 6 months, so plan your training and exam accordingly.
Step 6: Upload with Your Application
Once received, upload your background check report when submitting your Ohio Notary Public or renewal application.
Next Step:
After receiving your BCI report, visit Ohio Notary Services to complete training, testing, and submit your application to the Ohio Secretary of State.
Can You Become a Notary Public in Ohio with a Felony?
It depends on the offense. Some convictions are considered disqualifying offenses under Ohio law. Violations of Section 4776.10 or Chapter 2913 of the Revised Code will result in failure of the State of Ohio background check.
The following types of criminal offenses can prevent you from receiving an Ohio notary commission:
- Sexually oriented offenses
- Crimes involving violence
- Theft and fraud
- Any felony related to the duties of a notary public
Note: If a notary is convicted or pleads guilty or no contest to a disqualifying offense after being commissioned, they must immediately notify the Secretary of State's office.
Do You Need a Background Check to Renew an Ohio Notary Public Commission
Yes. If you're renewing your Ohio notary public commission, a new BCI background check is required. You will need to upload the report when submitting your renewal application.
Keep in mind:
- There is no grace period for expired commissions
- Processing still takes 4 to 6 weeks, so apply early to avoid delays
What Happens After You Complete the Background Check
Once you receive your background check results:
- Visit Ohio Notary Services
- Complete your notary training and testing (if required)
- Submit your full application to the Ohio Secretary of State
