Unlike other jobs, there is a legal limit to how much Ohio notaries are allowed to charge for their services. Whether you're performing traditional notarizations or authorized for remote online notarization (RON), Ohio law clearly outlines the maximum fees notaries may charge for each individual notarization.

Check out the helpful tips compiled by our team below to ensure you stay within the legal limit as an Ohio notary.

How Much Can an Ohio Notary Charge Per Notarial Act?

Under Ohio notary laws, you are permitted to charge fees per notarial act--not per signature.

  • For traditional notarizations (such as acknowledgements or jurats), an Ohio notary may charge up to $5.00 per notarial act.
  • For remote online notarizations, a commissioned Ohio remote online notary may charge up to $30.00 per online notarial act.

These are the maximum allowable fees and should not be exceeded, even if the signer offers to pay more.

Can an Ohio Notary Charge for Travel?

Yes. An Ohio notary may charge a reasonable travel fee, but only if:

  • The fee is agreed upon in advance by both the notary and the principal (the person signing the document)
  • The agreement is made before the notarial act is performed

The travel fee should reflect time, distance, and convenience--but should remain fair and transparent.

Quick Recap: Ohio Notary Fee Guidelines

Type of Notarial Act Maximum Fee Allowed
Traditional Notarization (in-person) $5.00 per notarial act
Remote Online Notarization (RON) $30.00 per notarial act
Travel (optional) Reasonable fee, agreed upon in advance

Stay Compliant with Ohio Notary Laws

It's essential that every Ohio notary follows state guidelines when charging fees. Overcharging--whether intentional or not--can lead to complaints, fines, or even revocation of your notary commission.

If you're unsure whether your pricing complies with Ohio law, be sure to reference the Ohio Secreatary of State's notary guidance or complete official notary training.
